mixed things up with a fastball in the low 90s Antworten

MILWAUKEE -- Jason Hammel threw a sinker early in counts to try to entice groundball outs against an aggressive lineup and mixed things up with a fastball in the low 90s. It was an overwhelming combination for the short-handed Milwaukee Brewers. Hammel had a season-high seven strikeouts and allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings, Starlin Castro hit two solo homers and the Chicago Cubs snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-0 win Sunday. Hammel, one of the few bright spots in a dismal April for Chicago, made his impressive work sound easy afterward. He hasnt given up more than five hits in each of his five starts. "I featured a pretty good sinker down in the zone early to get a lot of ground balls and just attacked the zone," he said. "So, thats really all it was today." Hammel (4-1) didnt allow a hit until Carlos Gomez doubled down the left-field line with one out in the sixth. He then got into trouble after walking Scooter Gennett and making an errant pickoff throw to put runners at second and third. But the righty got a strikeout before Aramis Ramirez bounced out to end the threat. "Great, great job. Mixed all his pitches well. Stayed down," manager Rick Renteria said. Chicago improved to 8-16, the last team in the majors to get to eight victories. Chicago scored twice in the second on Castros first homer and Darwin Barneys RBI fielders choice with the bases loaded off Brewers starter Wily Peralta (3-1). Castros second shot in the eighth off reliever Brandon Kintzler barely cleared the wall in the left-field corner. Castro had his second career multi-homer game in nearly three weeks, having going deep twice April 8 against Pittsburgh. His second-inning homer also just cleared the wall 400 feet away in dead centre and evaded the leaping Gomezs outstretched glove. On the mound, Peralta pumped his right arm in front of his waist in frustration. He thought the Gold Glove-winning Gomez might have had a shot at robbing the homer. "Always," Peralta said. "When GoGo runs back, you think he has a chance to make the catch." Gomez said he had the perfect timing, "but its not even close." He went 1 for 4 on his bobblehead day. Peralta, a right-hander with a 96-mph fastball had trouble spotting pitches in the second. Ramirez stepped on third for an out on Barneys grounder but his throw trying to get Nate Schierholtz at home bounced up the first-base line to allow the run to score. Despite not having his best command, Peralta still just gave up three runs on eight hits in seven innings. He struck out six. "If hes not going to be sharp and thats what he does, its pretty good," manager Ron Roenicke said. Having Ryan Braun and Jean Segura could have helped, but both Milwaukee stars missed the game with injuries. Braun sat with a slight chest muscle strain, while Segura had a partially closed right eye and bruised right cheek after being accidentally hit during a practice swing by Braun on Saturday. Segura said after the game he hoped to return this week during the Brewers seven-game road trip to St. Louis and Cincinnati. Braun might miss three to five days. The remaining Brewers were overmatched by Hammel, who stayed low and away from the Brewers remaining potent right-handed bats. Hammel was lifted after allowing pinch hitter Rickie Weeks single to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon held the Brewers hitless the final two innings. LOUIS -- Jordan Zimmermann needed just 76 pitches to throw his second straight complete game for the Washington Nationals. He made one big mistake, and Matt Adams drove it over the wall in centre to lead Lance Lynn and the St. Louis Cardinals to a 1-0 victory Friday night. It was "a changeup that was down the middle," Zimmermann said. "He made me pay. Its tough, but tomorrows another day." Lynn threw eight innings of two-hit ball and Adams homered on his first swing since coming off the disabled list. Zimmermann (5-3) threw a two-hit shutout at San Diego his last start and worked 19 2-3 consecutive scoreless innings before Adams hit his fourth homer on a 1-0 pitch with two outs in the second. He gave up three hits, two of them by Adams, in eight innings against St. Louis for his seventh career complete game and third in a loss. Zimmermanns 76 pitches were the franchises lowest total in a complete game since it relocated to Washington in 2005. The Nationals turned two double plays. "I was throwing a lot of strikes and they were coming up hacking," Zimmermann said. "I was locating the fastball, got a lot of groundballs and had good defence behind me." Just no offence. "He was on and we were off," cleanup man Adam LaRoche said after going 0 for 3. "The majority of the time when Ive seen Jordan, hes really had it." Adams was activated from the 15-day disabled list from a strained left calf earlier Friday and rookie Oscar Taveras was optioned to Triple-A Memphis. Lynn (7-4) struck out eight with no walks against the NL East leaders, who had won 10 of 13. Trevor Rosenthal added three more strikeouts in the ninth, working around rookie second baseman Kolten Wongs two-out error on Denard Spans routine grounder for his 18th save in 21 chancess.dddddddddddd Zimmermann is 0-5 against the Cardinals and 0-2 against the Pirates, the only two NL teams he hasnt beaten. The Cardinals have won 10 of the last 12 regular-season meetings, and beat the Nationals in the 2012 NL division series. Lynn retired his first 16 batters. He got some help from his defence when shortstop Jhonny Peralta went into the hole to snare Jayson Werths one-hop liner in the fourth and threw to first to end the inning. Jose Lobaton singled with one out in the sixth for Washingtons first baserunner and took an extra base when left fielder Matt Holliday bobbled the ball. But Zimmermann popped out and Span flied out to centre to end the inning. "Needless to say, he had pretty good stuff," LaRoche said. "Both guys did." Werth singled with one out in the seventh but was erased on LaRoches double-play ball. Lynn is 22-9 at home for his career, and shut out the Yankees in his first career complete game on May 27. He surrendered six runs in a total of 8 1-3 innings in a pair of losses in his next two starts at Toronto and against the Giants. The game was played in a snappy 2 hours, 3 minutes, fastest of the season at Busch Stadium. "Just a pretty quick, lifeless game offensively," LaRoche said. "Its amazing how quick that game was." NOTES: A pair of 2009 first-round draft picks are matched on Saturday with Stephen Strasburg (6-4, 2.99 ERA) opposing Shelby Miller (7-5, 3.59 ERA). Miller is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA against Washington. ... All four of Adams homers have come at home. ... LaRoche made two nice defensive plays at first, scooping up the relay on Peraltas double-play ball in the fifth and then snaring Matt Carpenters smash in the sixth. ...
